Weather: Strong winds return in the morning, then back off, and then return after nightfall. More cold weather on the way.
Where: Cows (254) in EG-11. Bulls (18) in WG-4. Heifers (74) EG-5 to include a sliver of EG-8 (area in front of winter facility shelter). Calves (264) in LS-2-5.

Calves came in early for water. I grabbed two bales of hay and led them into the new split in LS-5. I was planning to move cows, yet I noticed about 40 of the heifers in LS-14. Hard to figure how they got there without mixing with the cows. I trialed them back to EG-5 and put in a back fence to avoid this happening again. Returned to check calf water and heat the new split. Finally, got back to cows for a late afternoon split. Ended a long day feeding heifers their alfalfa supplement. Geese cruise overhead headquarters in the morning and crested wheat starting and early green up.

Weather: Strong uncomfortable westerly winds all day then quiet and mild as day ends.
Where: Cows (254) in EG-11. Bulls (18) in WG-4. Heifers (74) EG-5 to include a sliver of EG-8 (area in front of winter facility shelter). Calves (264) in LS-2.

Snow Moon. Two 10-acre splits for the cows. Heifers one split around 5-arces. Calves finishing up last grass at the back end of LS-2 following their Bangs vaccinations. We hope to get back into LS-5 before cooler wetter weather blows in next week.

Weather: Cool yet nice.
Where: Cows (254) in EG-11. Bulls (18) in WG-4. Heifers (74) EG-5 to include a sliver of EG-8 (area in front of winter facility shelter). Calves (264) in LS-2.

Becca from Crazy Mt Vet arrives to Bangs vaccinate the heifer calves and back pour all the calves. New calf count-135 steers and 131 heifers. Average calf weight is 441. Weights were 380 on Nov 16. .61#/day gain. Last year it was .75. Ideal target is 1 pound/day for backgrounding period. Great working crew.
One 8 acre move for cows. No move for  heifers and fed 1 alfalfa bale. Calves get two bales at end of day.

Weather: Very calm and mild.
Where: Cows (254) in EG-11. Bulls (18) in WG-4. Heifers (74) EG-5 to include a sliver of EG-8 (area in front of winter facility shelter). Calves (264) in LS-2.

Two splits for cows totaling 14 acres. One move for heifers. Calves stay put and are getting 2 bales a day. Extending days in LS-2 until heifesr get worked on 2.23. At dusk I hear a few horned larks singing east of house. Ryan finally gets water to Pit after days of frustration with numerous complications at the main well at Lackey.

Tentative yet sweet
Dusk welcomes first song of spring
Just walking back home

Weather: Calm and mild from the beginning. Muddy, Muddy. Muddy.
Where: Cows (254) in LS-15. Bulls (18) in WG-4. Heifers (74) EG-5 to include a sliver of EG-8 (area in front of winter facility shelter). Calves (242 (268)) in LS-2.

Tyler and Cayse move cows into first split EG-11 while Dana and I lean into ranch finances. Cows had a different idea and returned to LS-15. Calves moved to last split in LS-2. No moves for heifers and hay supplement late in the afternoon. Tyler and I work with Tara from Native to clean up our annual grazing report. Getting close back to zero with the water.

Weather: Bitter SW winds welcome the day. The afternoon is calm and pleasant.
Where: Cows (254) in LS-15. Bulls (18) in WG-4. Heifers (74) EG-5 to include a sliver of EG-8 (area in front of winter facility shelter). Calves (242 (268)) in LS-2.

We moved cows twice, and the heifers once. Heifers continue to receive 12# of hay every other day.  Calves were a bit scattered in the morning due to the cold SW winds, Calves get 2 bales at end of day, and they finally found their fresh split we made the day before. BJ and Ryan found and fixed the leak at the Lackey well-bad valve from a country far across the Pacific.

Weather: Clear. Cold. Calm. Single digits yet warm weather coming.
Where: Cows (254) in LS-15. Bulls (18) in WG-4. Heifers (74) EG-5 to include a sliver of EG-8 (area in front of winter facility shelter). Calves (242 (268)) in LS-2.

Cows, heifers move once. Calves get two bales plus straw. I push them to their new split near the far end of LS-2. Break in Lackey well discovered in the afternoon. Pit half full. Ryan and BJ pumped housing out and hopefully will find the leak in the morning. Movie night with Alaina.
