Ryan has been taking care of chores for Jake and Vickie all week along with tending to ranch chores-the strain of generosity. The clutch on the green truck goes out-six year of steady use plus fighting this snow. Heading to the shop. Weather: Super cold night then a touch of drifting SW winds starts a slow warming trend.

Enough feed laid out that last two days to pass on feeding today. Keep truck movement to a minimum. The energy used during these cold periods is scary-need to keep tuning up our design to lower energy use, i.e., heating shop, running water, feed trucks, heating homes. How to the hawk feed in the deep snow. Two Short-eared hawks feeding and floating at dusk with deep steady wing beats. Quiet, calm, and lovely. Weather: And even more snow and even colder.

Super cold tonight and then tomorrow a welcome shift to a warming trend. I have been lax on tacking supplement consumption. Through the period we have been feeding about 3 bags protein and 1 to 2 bags mineral, and very low salt. Total straw has averaged around 14 bales a day between calves and cows. Weather: More snow and colder.

Livestock Inventory change: Doctored: Daily work remains checking waters and supplement, keeping ahead on straw, keeping steady, being safe, and moving as little as possible. We are getting close to where we might need a tractor to plow out some trails. Warmer days forecasted by end of week. We just need to grind out way through the next few days.
Weather: Mildly cold and calm early with light snow and NE winds picking up at end of day.

Weather: More snow and bitter cold throughout the period but some warming today but won’t last long.

Off and on challenges with water but Ryan does a great job keeping the animals watered with help from John at Pfister’s. Two short-eared owns observed driving back to the ranch. Weather: More snow-maybe close to a foot of new snow this week.

Livestock Inventory change: Doctored: Ryan seems to have figured out a strategy for the Pfister water by knowing what time Casey feeds and opens an extra hydrant for his cows-which is the same time when our tank losses pressure and our hydrant freezes. Ryan simply needs to be at our tank when this is happening to allow our hydrant to drain back. With snow level it is hard to heat the calf fence and thus they have access to all of L-13. TNC meeting ended today, and I plan to head to Spokane tomorrow. Weather: Off and on snow with temps hovering in the single digits or sometimes lower.

Cows and Pfister group on full feed straw and grazing when they can. Calve remain on 1 bale of hay and full feed straw and grass. Wrestling with water at Pfister’s as Casey Kombol, who has leased the lower Pfister pasture by Hwy 12, has brought back his cows and our cows are competing for water because of well location and gravity. Still assessing our next step. We may need to retreat to the home ranch. |
