Beautiful spring day-calm, clear, and warm.  3’s are moved back to north end of NBW3 and fed their hay supplement. Bulls and   ‘suckers’ move into SBW2 an placed in a tight lane for impact. Cows settled in last split in NBW9. We debate whether to call them out off good feed due to storm predictions for tomorrow. We elect to stay. We pulled successfully two new calves from heifers.  Natalie and I join Roland for MAIA instruction. The two of us also attend webinar for RMG Project application for the “Salazar Prize”. And the juncos arrived to feeders in the yard.

Clear with some afternoon winds. Branded 7 new bulls and rings in sucker cows. 3’s are still in NBW3. Cows in NBW9 traveled 1mile to water and returned again to last strip on NBW9. Maybe  one more day left to graze, as crossing the creek is getting more difficult. Every day we hear a little more song, and grow a little more grass.

Cool, clear, and calm. Cows slowly moved into last split in NBW9, negotiating safe lanes through the water overflow areas. We moved 3’s into NBW3 on way to mix with cows when the cows  come back around to south side of Big Wall.

Cool SW morning winds, then turning nice. Fed cows in county paddock NBW14. I will get cows back into NBW9. N and I moved  calves into next split. 2’s moved into next split. One lone tundra swan is seen resting on ponds at end of Big Wall. First night heifers are put into corrals for the night.

Clear and moderate. Crazy day. Ryan gets feed truck stuck. Cow gets stuck in creek at Big Wall. Cows slip into the wrong paddock, while we are attending stuck things. One of Ryan’s horses gets sick. Natalie misses it all as she is zoom conferencing all day. In the end, not so bad, as great help is gathered to help with truck and cows. Grass is growing and cows are well, and people are  upright and completing the essential work of raising food. We worry more for those who are not here.

Partly cloudy with cool SW winds. We prepared check fence for next cow move-same for 2’s-and moved calves to next split, now too numerous to count. Big Wall ponds are pretty quiet of ducks,  yet 50 to 60 geese are located on the reservoir.

Cloudy, cool, and damp. Morning filled with conference calls with CNB and RMG-Salazar Center Grant application committee. Ryan  fed cows and Natalie and I move cows into 3rd split in NBW9-long runs through fast moving North willow Creek. Cavorting Golden Eagles are seen daily along west end of Big Wall.

Clouds and cooler. Animals beginning to get processed in Colorado-Dana can’t wait for payments to help with tight cash flows.  First week morning meeting was held with Natalie. Steve  Charter, son Ressa, and new apprentice, Susan, (.same program that brought us Natalie) arrived for a temporary fence instruction.  Natalie and I finish off afternoon building new splits for 3’s and calves. First calf of the season born.

Sunny and mild and perfect weather for working cows. We brought 2’s and 3’s back to corrals to re-tag and separate. 3’s returned to SBW2 with a planned series of tight splits to impact  some old crested wheat, before being mixed with main cow herd before calving begins. 2’s (first calve heifers) placed in first split in  NNG3.

We wake to morning snow (3”) turning warm and fresh in the afternoon. Fed cows back into NBW9 and second split, and now main group (400) back into the planned rotation.  Travis      delivered 7 new bulls.  Day ended calm, with cows full and content, ground damp and fresh, eagles playing overhead, and   deer and antelope in view. For a brief moment in time, this remote   space on the northern plains, it is about as close to perfect, as one could hope.
