Weather: Overcast and misty damp.
Where: Cows (254) in L-9. Bulls (18) in WG-4. Heifers (74) EG-5 to include a sliver of EG-8 (area in front of winter facility shelter). Calves (264) in LS-3.

Cows move to next split (26 acres). Hay day. Two black-baldy calves (65 and 825). My bad for not checking the grazing journal that would have told us that the Hereford bulls got out on 6.27 last year and bred two cows-so 368 days from then to today. Another Kestrel near winter facility and a bald eagle yesterday in the same area.

Cows move to next split (26 acres). Calves still working on their new split. Tyler observes about five deer and a group of antelope just SE of house. A male Kestrel along road to town.

Weather: Cooler and overcast with an uncomfortable breeze.
Where: Cows (254) in L-10-9. Bulls (18) in WG-4. Heifers (74) EG-5 to include a sliver of EG-8 (area in front of winter facility shelter). Calves (264) in LS-3.

Cows move to L-9. First split is 62 acres. Calves move to next split of 20 acres. All three groups fed because of the wet day yesterday. Good to have available alternative protein in the mineral trailer. Noce group of sharp tails and a pair of Huns. Several small circles of Prairie Sand Reed grass amongst crested wheat in area that we cover-cropped and seeded over 5 years ago. Very cool.

Weather: High overcast, cool, and light late afternoon melt.
Where: Cows (254) in L-10. Bulls (18) in WG-4. Heifers (74) EG-5 to include a sliver of EG-8 (area in front of winter facility shelter). Calves (264) in LS-3.

Cows move to fresh split. Heifers grazing out and content and a hay day. Calves have spent more time back in LS-4 through the unsettled weather. Receiving hay and straw every other day. Plan to feed hay to the cows’ late afternoon but the ground too soft. We will feed tomorrow on the morning hard frost.
Dr. Bob Sager, a vet nutrition consultant visited the ranch. Called the cows just right, heifers maybe ½ condition score low, and calves healthy. Recommended we test the water again to ensure our mineral is fully responding to salt-based antagonists in our water. Also recommended testing our alfalfa supplement to see if we could adjust downward the amount of phosphorus (expensive) in our mineral supplement.

Weather: Light snow all day and reasonably calm north winds. Breaking up at day’s end.
Where: Cows (254) in L-10. Bulls (18) in WG-4. Heifers (74) EG-5 to include a sliver of EG-8 (area in front of winter facility shelter). Calves (264) in LS-3.

Snow accumulation overall was about 6”, and about half already is in the ground. As we planned, no need for moves today for Sunday. Calves got their hay supplement at the end of the day.

Three swans on the water.
Daily chorus of red wings.
Seasons are shifting.

Weather: Fog like overcast with some light snow all day. Not so cold as expected.
Where: Cows (254) in L-10. Bulls (18) in WG-4. Heifers (74) EG-5 to include a sliver of EG-8 (area in front of winter facility shelter). Calves (264) in LS-3.

As scheduled with our preparation for snowing cold weekend, only water and mineral checks with all groups and hay supplement to cows and heifers. Useful and fun 3 hour zoom succession planning facilitation for Malta ranch family. Pleasantly surprised with their progress.

Where: Cows (254) in L-10. Bulls (18) in WG-4. Heifers (74) EG-5 to include a sliver of EG-8 (area in front of winter facility shelter). Calves (264) in LS-3.

Larger split for cows and calves to hold them for the weekend. Afternoon hay supplement for calves. Rough-legged hawks still present yet not much longer. Red tails mixing in the raptor play.
