Continued nice with some very light showers. We reviewed some possible riparian planting with BLM folks. Observed a thirteen-lined ground squirrel in NNG 3. I heard my first grasshopper sparrow. In the evening Ryan spotted 4 bull elk hanging with the cows.

Very warm-probably warmest day this year. Bulls got out-in fact right under our bedroom window. No mistaking they were in the wrong place. We gathered them up and placed then in a new lane. Found one dead calf with older cow mob. In the evening moved cows into west half in WL8. I observed signs of a newly found sharp-tail lek on ridge in the same paddock.

Overcast, mild, and breezy. Early morning cow move into first split in WL2. Later Natalie picks up old fence posts in WL3. 2’s locked into new lane in NNG3-still moving almost every day. We met with BJ to work on summer tank in winter facility. Red winged blackbirds, including some yellow-headed blackbirds, continue to delight with non-stop singing in the yard.

Warm and breezy. I open new lane for 2’s in NNG3. Cows stay put in last split near edge of Big Wall in WL3 (5th split). We are getting good impact on the clover. I heard the winnowing of the first Wilson Snipe near creek crossing on way to winter facility.

Cool and damp yet no measurable moisture. I moved cows in the afternoon into last split in WL3. Bulls blow out of their paddock and it takes me a good section of the morning to get things straightened out. I hear my first savannah sparrow just north if the house.

Cloudy with very light showers. 2’s in the morning, and main cow mob, in the afternoon, move to new splits. We had an interesting team discussion about whether to tag calves during calving versus  at branding-leaning to making a change away from tagging.

Lately no night time frosts. All groups move into fresh splits. Shane and Paul at BLM visit to discuss riparian shrub plantings.    We all agreed to try and get some shrubs and trees planted this  spring. Cows move backwards into NBW5 for a bit, waiting for us to lay out fresh splits in WL3. More curlew calls being heard, along with this year’s first horn toad sighting.
