Weather: Very mild and warm day. Finish month with .70 inches of moisture.
Corrals: Bull move out to grass but 5 calves for Max to work with are left. WG9: Cows (416 includes some dries) Entry: No moves as we provided a large split yesterday. Likely to move into EG tomorrow. Two more new calves and finally our first whiteface calf. Carlyle getting the hang of tagging calves. Bulls (17) finally move out to grass just east of house in the Little Switzerland unit. They were very happy to be back on green grass! The month ends with chorus frogs chorusing signaling warming weather.

Weather: Heavy overcast and light sprinkles all day yielded about .20 of moisture. April is about at .70 for the month.

We opened about 90 acres, or 2 to 3 possible splits, to accommodate possible stormy and wet conditions. Last split for WG9. Vesper sparrows, Thick-billed longspurs, and Spotted Towhees add more song as spring advances with just enough moisture to support slow growth. Nice sendoff dinner for Alaina, as she heads to Glacier to join the horse packing crew. Weather: Very light shower last night. Heavy overcast with sprinkles at bedtime. Much more forecasted?!

Sage grouse spotted at Reservoir and east Lackey. Robins finally start singing in earnest at dusk. Weather: Mild with rain predicted this evening.

With the very cold wind the day before more thorough check might have prevented this. Always hurts. Later afternoon I visited the springs below the Big Wall. Plies of waterfowl including Mallard, Shoveler, Gadwall, Pintail, Widgeon, Lesser Scaup, Green-winged teal, Canvasback, Ring-necked duck, Common Goldeneye, Bufflehead, and Canada Geese. Also, saw a Great Blue Heron fly over. Weather: Rain turns to cold NW winds.

An early breakout and we quickly expand split to about 35 acres to keep all contained. Carlyle and I work with Peter and Roland on the growing season and upload the plan to MAIA. Weather: Light rain all day and into the night.

Then the afternoon is spent with Film Crew from Cornell Ornithology Lab in Ithaca, NY. Filming focused on Wildlife Friendly Fence. The whole ranch team got involved. |
