Weather: Mostly warm with a brief unrealized storm threat
Where: Cows (215 + 130 2’S + 66= 415) in BW-7. 415 X 1.6= 664 AD demand). Bulls (21) + 10 horses (always been mixed) in WG-2.

Last split in BW-7. Bulls stay put. We trailed the new 66 Charter pairs into the main cow group that now numbers 415. Seemed to go smoothly. I walked the gravelly ridge in EG-7 to check out the Thick-billed Longspurs-very loyal to this shallow short-grass site. Hoppers present in most areas, and while not burdensome, I suspect the summer damage may be measurable.

Weather: Just cool enough to be warm. Just right.
Where: Cows (214 + 130 2’S) in BW-7. Bulls (21) + 10 horses (always been mixed) in WG-2.

Both the cow group and bull group move to fresh splits. I counted the cows in the field (354)- a rough count. We received 66 cow pairs from Charters. We fed them in the corral to settle them to being here and to us. Needle and thread seeds stating to fall out thank goodness. Nice evening visit with Adolph’s. Rick mentioned about the many curlews he has seen and some nesting burrowing owls south of his corrals. Rancher’s observations are way to underrepresented in the world of wildlife biology. Tyler returns after a week retrieving a new car form Atlanta.

Weather: Cool and blustery all day.

Began morning at 7:00am loading 36 (average weight 1156#) grass cows headed to the Mannix Ranch. Cut back 5 older cows for sale in Billings. Then I moved cow group to next split (6) in BW7. Put a hot fence around marsh area with a Sora Rail Family.

Night comes cool and windy
Robin sings despite it all
Where does end begin?

Weather: Another pleasant day.
Where: Cows (214 + 130 2’S) in BW-7. Bulls (21) + 10 horses (always been mixed) in WG-2.

Third spilt in BW-7 counting first split with heifer pairs on south end before both groups mixed. Everyone relaxed and full. Bulls broke out yet back in quickly. Lark Bunting pair in BW-7-not many this year.

No moves. Just letting cows and calves relax. Good year for prickly pear.

Weather: Probably our warmest day this spring.
Where: Cows (214 + 130 Heifer pairs) in Bw-3-BW-7 lot. Bulls (21) + 10 horses (always been mixed) in WG-2.

Pretty tired and trying to sleep late yet had a feeling something might be amiss. Drove to water center in BW-3-7 and found a good slice of cows had broken out, as well as some of the heifer pairs as well and both escapees had also found each other. Initially I was furious as I had hoped to keep both groups separate through breeding. Our earlier plan was to mix the groups post branding, and I guess the cows thought that was the better of the two plans. I spent most of the day adjusting and tonight the combined group were in both BW-3 and 7. For ease of managing grass and labor this is a better alternative. I hope it will also be a good plan for getting an adequate breed up. Long day yet enjoyed seeing some sora rail chicks and a pair of short-eared owls.

Weather: Clear with modest high temps then heavy short shower post branding.
Where: Cows (254) in LS-17-corral lot. Bulls (21) + 10 horses (always been mixed) in WG-2. Heifers (74) and Charter (61) in BW-7.

Branding day. Tyler’s friends Milan, Jordan, and Liam helped first thing before folks arrived to cut out grass fed cattle (40) for the Mannix program and cows that lost calves (28 +12), and then separate calves from the cows. Though lacking experience, yet mindful to respond to my signals, the process went as well as ever. Started vaccinating cows and branding calves simultaneously. Lot of new folks yet everyone found their place and enjoyed themselves. Dana, as is always the case, put out more wonderful food than all the crew could eat. And did I share that the weather was on our side and there was no dust.

Weather: Partly cloudy and pleasant all day with light shower late night.
Where: Cows (254) in LS-17. Bulls (21) + 10 horses (always been mixed) in WG-2. Heifers (74) and Charter (63) in BW-7.

Trail pairs calmly and quietly into corrals mid-afternoon. The easiest ever. Started cutting Mannix grass fed cows. Didn’t work so well in the larger back lot. Decided to do it when we cut calves and cows before vaccination and branding.
