Heat ratches back up into triple digits. The 27th is hottest night to date-close to 90 degrees after 9:00. Two splits in NBW11, yet cows often found loafing along creek in NBW12 during heat of mid-day.  When there is always fresh feed with new splits, cows tend to spend little time at the water. ‘Headquarters pond’ harboring multiple Leapard frogs.

Some breaks in heat yet ‘heat dome’ over northwest seems stuck and unrelenting. Predicting more triple digit temps in the coming week. Mostly making daily splits in NBW12-13 moving north. Today moved into new split along North Willow creek (now dry) in south end of NBW11. Moves are being planned to minimize trailing and dust and encouraging moving to fresh feed. I find our cow moves are becoming more flexible and adaptive relying more on temporary fence and less so on permanent fence. Different bird groups are flocking together with new young. I suspect second clutches will be rare unless moisture conditions change.

Unrelenting heat yet some welcoming cool down during the night. I moved cows into a small first split in NBW12-13 early in the morning. I have been a bit pressed with ranch camp hikes and cooking. Cows enjoying being on greasewood. Moria, and her visiting fireman friend Joe, helped me feed 2 square bales to cows for pre-breeding protein supplement.

Serious heat returns. I went out very early and move lingering pairs into NBW13. Despite my incessant worrying about water, the water delivery is holding up well. Last few days. White Pelicans have been hanging out at reservoir and pond at end of Big Wall.

Smokey and a little cooler. Natalie, I, and many of the ranch camp crew rise early to move cows in to NBW13. Many calves go back yet mostly all paired up by late afternoon. Layla heads back to Washington DC for a few days to visit her family.

Received over 3 tenths of moisture last night (13th). Very welcome for cooling things off and settling the dust. Cows are in third split in NBW16. Bird songs are quickly quieting. Singing was sporadic and intermittent this morning-even from the robins and meadowlarks.

Mild morning turning hot then finishing with cooler gusty winds. We moved mob to 2nd split in NBW16. First ranch campers arrive.

Warming up again. We moved 2’s into the main mob (450 + or).
Captured one escaped bull which turned into a melee. Bull will need to go to the sale next week. Cows stay in first split in NBW16. Meadowlarks are still barely singing-how quickly the breeding season ends especially on dry years like 2021.
