Weather: Less wind and mild conditions remain.
EG (5): Repeat and repeat. Ryan makes progress on winterizing Carlyle’s cabin. Long work session with Liess at MAIA with Carlyle, Roland, and Rick addressing how to best project stocking rate for the next year. We are trying to see if we might keep the heifer yearlings and still meet our target recovery periods-400 plus days. Not there yet.

Weather: Not so soft today. Steady strong and drying winds but not too cold.
EG (5): Two more moves. Maybe two days left in EG-5 before we head south to EG-4. Making splits ahead as both Carlyle and I will be gone for part of the week. Carlyle heading to Quivira conference in Denver. Lone male harrier just gliding. Dana turns our 2022 crab apples into vintage honey mellow sweet apple cider. Each year the cider offers a different taste and texture.

Weather: Golden soft, warm, and clear weather returns for a day
EG (5): Moving from 8 to about 10 acre moves 2x a day seemed to be a good choice. Cleaned and saw dusted the chicken coop. No rough-legged hawks (our winter hawk) have arrived yet. Oh, we had a new calf. Don’t ask.

Weather: Not so cold last two days yet steady winds make it feel so.
EG (5): Similar moves daily. Nice rhythm for people and cows. Team focused on clean up and pre-winter chores.

Weather: Hard frost last night. Partly cloudy and cool today.
EG (5): We moved 2x again. Ryan starting to address pre-winter water prep-drain unneeded tanks, tune up overflows, some extra gravel to firm up approaches to tanks. BJ continues to make process on pipeline work. A few goldfinches return to yard.

Weather: Perfect condition yet a little moisture would not hurt.
LS (12): Grazing in and out of corrals. Tested on 19th. Very smooth. (90% bred; 75% first cycle; calves weigh 415).

Weather: Some cooling and then some wind yet mostly moderate calm conditions prevail this month of October-forecast to continue into next week.
EG (4): Two splits a day averaging close to 25 ads per acre. Carlyle and I feel cows seem most in rhythm and content when we move twice daily. Attended a workshop with Matt Ricketts, NRCS range and private consultants, supports light grazing (50% or less) harvest during the heart of the growing season (April through June) to optimize annual root growth. Triggers a useful debate on what multi-year grazing plan best ensure recovery and upward succession for the plant community.
