Weather: Cool biting morning SW wind gives way to melting conditions by afternoon.
Where: Cows and heifers in LS-12. Heifers (75). Bulls (18) west of corrals.
Cows trailed to corrals where old cows and very light calves were cut away from the main herd for early sale. Max and I trailed and worked the cows all on our own. Feet a bit sore but the day went smoothly without mishap.

Weather: NW winds bring continuing moderating conditions forecast thankfully for the next week.
Where: Cows and heifers now in LS-12. Heifers (75). Bulls (18) west of corrals.
Started new tank (this year’s pipeline phase) that can water east end of LS-12. Plan to move cows to corrals to work off light calves and older poor condition cows. Bulls wandering in trees in west LS…gather soon and move to Ryan’s’.

Weather: Wake to snow, cold and wind. 6 to 7 inches. Snow tapers off by late afternoon.
Where: Cows and heifers in WG-10. Heifers (75). Bulls (18) west of corrals.
We move cows to fresh split, but cold north wind pushes then south over already grazed splits. Lesson: always leave something as you never know when have the need to return unexpectedly.

Weather: Sunny early followed in the evening by cold, north winds, and snow.
Where: Cows and heifers in WG-10. Heifers (75). Bulls (19) west of corrals.
Cows move to new 26-acre strip. Tyler prepares a 45-acre split for tomorrow anticipating the arriving first snowstorm of the fall. I spend part of the day in Winnett meeting with a variety of resource partners supporting family ranchers. In the evening I meet with a small core of Roundup folks concerned with the alarming depression rates (plus 60%) in our youth population. How to help ourselves??

Cows move to fresh split (17 acres) in WG-10? Dr. Daniel Alquist from Michigan State come to visit about grass, people, and space-maybe a possible research project. Ryan, Will, Jason, and Tyler replace roof on the apprentice cabin.

Weather: Almost “too nice” continues
Where: Cows and heifers in WG-10. Heifers (75). Bulls (19) west of corrals
Tyler lets the cow group drift back to a fresh split on native cover in WG-10 (19 acres). I return to ranch driving down the Musselshell Valley, easily one of the most beautiful drives in Montana, So much uncluttered space.

Cows work on the crested wheat but are uncomfortable. Two splits 5.2 and 11.4. I travel to Helena to join a panel with
The Merlin Society on “What is legacy?” I also get a long-awaited Rolfing session in with Hope.
