Ryan gets assistance from Pat Charlton and John (bobcat) to tune up water tank (leak and overflow) at Pfister’s. I walked through L-13 and cows 11-day graze (9 ads) needs to end. Plan to move tomorrow.

Happy Thanksgiving. Everything stays put except calves and bulls. I move bulls out of BW-10 back to rest of BW (wide open) and fresh tank water along creek. Pile of feed in BW-10 being saved for when that tough weather arrives-the effective outcome of long rest. Enjoying the more than average number of wintering Rough-legged Hawks.

A few hiccups with the water tank at Pfister’s. Ryan figuring out the overflow system and applying enough bentonite to plug leakage in the center of the tire. Pfister group move to second split. Splits are larger than normal due to the presence of prairie dogs. Cows continue to set graze L-13. Calves in good routine of daily splits benefiting from fresh feed while also applying good soil surface/litter impact. Calves love to graze and can provide very useful herd effect if moves are frequent with sufficient stock density.

Moved the Pfister group away from Reservoir to water tank (clean fresh water) in SE corner of paddock-first split and now heading west. Returning I observed a Ferruginous Hawk (very unusual for this late in the fall) and three Rough-legged hawks, and a prairie falcon. Pipeline folks are laying pipe along road by the headquarters.

I was able to rush through all the groups in the morning so I could attend to some Community Foundation work in the afternoon. I think we are going to have enough stockpiled grass for the winter, and we have straw for at least two months. Open winter has allowed us to get a good graze (close to a month) on timbered paddocks in East Lackey.

I opened a hole in temporary fence to let Pfister group start floating toward water tank for better water. Ryan needs more bentonite in tank to seal it as the tank has not been used for a few years. Fed calves a little late in order to attend my Sunday morning Zen zoom group.. Long Vs of geese noisily heading south all day as the northern waters freeze up.

Calf feed routine finally falling into place. Feed one bale first thing (maybe add straw if needed) and check all. Mid to late afternoon move to fresh grass split. Moved Pfister group. Young cows are still breaking reservoir ice and getting by water wise-just ok. Checked cows and all are good with ample feed. Plenty more opportunity for conifer removal in L-13.

While juggling meetings only the calves were moved and that occurs at dusk. Afternoon zoom meeting to discuss remedies for our low pregnancy rate this year.

Ideas that resonated with me include:
  1. 50-day breeding season versus 45.
  2. Breed a little earlier-maybe a full cycle.
  3. Separate 2’s and 3’s, and even explore breeding young cows as coming 3’s.
  4. Always focus on condition-more like 6 score-to allow some leeway as forage conditions change and deteriorate in the summer.
  5. Maybe rely more on riparian areas (30 plus days) prior to bulls going in. Hard to manage recovery periods, yet…just put all available resources to getting 90% bred.
  6. Manage cows for what you want and what the land needs.

I move cows into rest of L-13 (over 200 Acres) and last section of pine trees. With Tyler gone and meetings to attend and I had to forego daily splits for a few days. Very cool to graze all the pine section of Lackey without any severe weather prompting possible pine needle threat. Reservoir water, freezing nights will trigger a move soon to the one tank, and thus changing our grazing pattern. I place calves in new paddock LS-2 in late afternoon. I capture 12 calves in lot that have been breaking through the electric fence.
