Much warmer and breezy. Cows moved to 4th split in NBW8 in afternoon after getting 4 alfalfa bales (every 4 days). New generator is back pumping water for 2’s at Andersons-great patient effort by Ryan. Need to get a split rotation going with calves. Oh, and the other ball joint broke on the toyoto truck and will sit lonely in the field until Monday. Glad to have the red truck for back up.

Cool SW winds return bringing more unseasonable warm weather to start our new year. Cows move to 3rd split in NBW8.

Clear and cool-just barely need gloves. Cows moved into 2nd split in NBW8. There is still a fair amount of cheat grass on sandy south slopes, yet the needle and thread also seem to be doing better-the desired perennial species for the site. Generator again broke down (oil seal) with the 2’s. I covered feeding calves for Ryan, as he took generator to Billings. Crazy. Chickadees and red-breasted nuthatches in the yard. Nice. Later this afternoon, Ryan shared we will be getting a new generator tomorrow.

Cooler with fog. Fog is always ‘cool’, and many associate its arrival with a future date for significant moisture. In the afternoon cows moved into first split in NBW8. No other moves.

Mostly cool, calm, and overcast with very light snow at times. Cows stayed put and received 4 bales in the afternoon.  To support cow rumen function my current plan is to feed 4 alfalfa bales every 4 days, and keep the biuret supplement available ad lib. No changes with other groups. We are supplementing calves-post pellet with a similar (less bitter) biuret supplement along with pasture and hay. Christmas Bird Count today. Not very productive only saw 14 species and numbers also light.

Wind returns (not so gusty) and cooler, yet calm returns at dusk. Cow mob moves in the morning into WL4. With no snow and mild conditions, I think I can harvest some feed in paddocks with trees. I think we can move into NBW8 next and hopefully get 5 or 6 splits. I made next split in WG2 just west of mid-gate allowing calves to all go back into WG3, where the next splits will be made.

Blessed calm with mild temperatures all day. Bulls drifted back to corrals. I trailed them back and made sure water was open (reason they came back) and the fence hot. Spliced a break on east-west line, where bulls likely escaped the first time. Cows stay put and supplement use has surprisingly leveled off. Calves are out of pellets. We will transition to a biuret supplement to complement hay and grass.

Winds return with gusto. Where is this windy pattern leading to? Forecasters seem to be in alignment that a drier spring awaits us. Another day for cows in WL3. I fed 3 alfalfa bales in the afternoon to stretch paddock stay until morning of the 26th. I plan to feed alfalfa every 3 or 4 days along with ad lib availability of biuret supplement to test consumption when 2 types of protein biuret supplement that together with a daily cost of 30 to 40 cents.

Cold yet calm. Cow mob moved to 4th and last split in WL3. May stay 2 days. We trailored the light calves in the corral back to main calf bunch at Ryans’. I walked the 10 bulls back over into Little Switzerland. The 2 butcher dries remain in the corrals. Nice flock of tree sparrows hanging in the yard. Christmas tree is up.

Beautiful damp and mild morning shifts quickly to NW winds and sharply cooler. Cows move to 3rd split in WL3. Ryan takes generator back to the well with the 2’s. Dana and I deliver presents to Morgan at Big Timber.
