No moves today. Harley, our supplement vendor, came to look at all the animal groups. Still some concern with cow condition and size of heifers. Everyone healthy.

Weather: Brisk breezy clear morning turning cool and calm by afternoon.
Where: Cows (254) in L-11. Bulls (18) in WG-4. Heifers (75) EG-9. Calves (242 (268)) in LS-7.
Calves 1 bale + 1 split. Heifers 1 split. Splits are 3 to 5 acres for both calves and heifers, I am leaving cows in 11 without splits to create holiday space for everyone. Black phase rough-legged hawk appears to be wintering on the ranch. Occasional raptors include both eagles, Harriers, Short-eared owls, Prairie Falcons, and Rough-legged hawks.

Weather: Brrr chilly in the morning yet turning calm and warmer by afternoon.
Where: Cows (254) in L-11. Bulls (18) in WG-4. Heifers (75) EG-9. Calves (242 (268)) in LS-7. Cows break in, or more accurately, enter L-12 because yours truly left the end gate open. Cow were happy to have 150 acres of unsplit grass. Moved calves. Our hay schedule with calves is 2 bales one day and one bale the next…and then daily moves. Heifers stayed put.

Weather: Stormy weather abates but still chilly.
Where: Cows (254) in L-12. Bulls (18) in WG-4. Heifers (75) EG-9. Calves (242 (268)) in LS-7.
I move cows to last split in L-12. Tyler gives heifer abut 3 days of grass to get us through Christmas. Tyler also moved calves to the next split.  I spent most of the afternoon spreading some holiday cheer delivering eggnog and cinnamon rolls. Finished the day with a lovely meal with Tyler and Dana.

Weather: Sharp reversal. Cold NW winds with about an inch of snow.
Where: Cows (254) in L-12. Bulls (18) in WG-4. Heifers (75) EG-9. Calves (242 (268)) in LS-7.
Everybody gets new splits. Cows could be doing better, and we need to be more certain our almost daily moves provide adequate amounts of forage. Harvesting around 15 to 20 Ads per acre. Returning at end of day spotted 3 Rough-Legged Hawks and one Harrier.

Weather: Begins windy and ends calm and calm and clear.
Where: Cows (254) in L-12. Bulls (18) in WG-4. Heifers (75) EG-9. Calves (242 (268)) in LS-7.
Calves and heifers move to fresh splits. Cows stay put. Tyler visits dog trainer in Judith Gap and is affirmed that his dog Sage is well on track to be a very skillful and powerful working dog. Testament to the power of You Tube instruction and steady disciplined effort. While moving heifers I flush a winter white Jack Rabbit-very vulnerable with a backdrop of grass yellow prairie.
